I once had the chance to spend a day or two with a coal mining family in the back country of Kentucky. Rising early in the bitter cold of winter to cook a full day's meal for the men in the family brought home the reality of the hard and unforgiving lifestyle of miners. Providing us with energy to heat our homes, schools, and businesses, their priorities seem to get lost along the way. This episode of Indepenent Lens takes a look into the pros and cons of a mountaintop removal coal mine and the impacts it has on the local economy and residents. Sure to be a thought provoking window into the lives of one Kentucky community.
