At one point I considered paleontology as a career, somewhere, as I recall, between Egyptologist and Dentist. Although I followed a different career path, I've never outgrown my fascination for the beasts, even watching all the Jurassic Park movies, albeit through my fingers during the really scary parts. I had read a little of the great fights between the egos of nineteenth-century paleontologists, so my eyes widened with glee at the mention of a whole program dedicated to their problems. You think a pair of T-Rex could tear into each other!

I remember peeking around the doorway to catch Captain Kirk and crew when I should have been in bed and asleep already. I got caught once or twice, but that just made me craftier in my pursuit of "the final frontier". Yes, the special effects were done on a budget to include salt shakers for high-tech equipment, but the whole concept of the future caught my imagination like nothing else. Now PBS will devote a program to the great ground-breaking series from my black-and-white years; Star Trek, Lost in Space, and Twilight Zone. I still snigger when someone yells "Danger, Danger!" and waves his arms around. And who could forget those Rod Serling twists of fate including broken eyeglasses and cosmetic surgery. Maybe a bowl of popcorn to keep me company while I enjoy the show?
